The partnership with the Newton Community School District in developing the School Resource Officer (SRO) program began in 1994 and has been a positive addition to the department and community ever since.
The primary function of the SRO is to serve as an intervention and prevention officer for all Newton Community School District students. The SRO is also available for parents and school staff who have concerns regarding students. An office is maintained by the SRO at the Newton Senior High School allowing open access for students with law enforcement needs. The SRO also receives administrative referrals from school administrators and, depending on the offense, takes the appropriate action.
The SRO is involved with various meetings, special projects, presentations, training, and special enforcement efforts throughout the year pertaining to his/her duties. The SRO is also actively involved with school programs and attends functions where he meets with students and parents.
