Public Works
Overview
The City of Newton Public Works Department is headed by the public works director / city engineer who
oversees and is responsible for operations of the following five divisions:
- Cemetery
Responsible for operations at Newton Union Cemetery
- Engineering
Responsible for City maps, maintaining records, drawings on past construction projects, locating City-owned utilities, assisting other departments with engineering support, and providing inspection for all work completed in the City's right-of-way
- Garbage and Recycling
Responsible for the operations at sanitary landfill
- Newton Municipal Airport - elevation 953 feet
Oversees operations of City Airport located immediately west of the Iowa Speedway, which consists of a 5,600 foot long by 100 foot wide runway, associated taxiways, apron areas, 18 hangars, terminal building, and maintenance hangar. The airport manager and FBO services are under contract with Johnson Aviation, Inc
- Streets
Responsible for street maintenance, snow removal, and upkeep of storm sewer collection system
- Water Pollution Control Division
Responsible for the treatment of wastewater and upkeep of sanitary sewer collection system
