The Self-Supporting Municipal Improvement District (SSMID) is a self-taxing district that collects and distributes funds for improvements or maintenance within the district. Members of the board are property owners in the district who volunteer to serve. The City is involved by providing support staff, but it is not a city endeavor but rather a citizen-driven grassroots effort for downtown Newton.
