[ARCHIVED] Parks Operations Update

Newton Sign with Flowers

Parks Operations have been busy with the spring routine of planting flowers and mulching in the city’s parks, cemeteries, right-of-ways, hike-and-bike trails, and golf course. Each year, hundreds of annuals are planted and the staff keeps up watering and fertilizing throughout the warmer months.

Parks Operation has also been sodding and seeding many areas throughout town. These areas include D&D properties, graves at the two city cemeteries, along new ADA ramps and sidewalks, and any other areas that have been damaged by the extended wet period.

Preparation for city events is another task that Parks Operations manager and stay busy with. This includes tournaments hosted at Westwood Golf course, events at Maytag Park including the Iowa Masters Disc Golf Tournament and Newton Fest, Maytag Pool activities, and many park shelter rentals.

Newton Little League, Newton Girls Softball, and NASA soccer leagues are all still in full swing. The two sand volleyball courts are being prepped for a new coed volleyball league hosted be the YMCA.
