[ARCHIVED] Newton Sanitary Landfill Yard Waste

Newton Sanitary Landfill Yard Waste

The landfill accepts leaves, small twigs (less than 1/4” in diameter), yard waste, weeds, garden waste, and hedge trimmings. This area is open for customers to use 24 hours per day, seven days per week, just outside the front gate of the landfill. Staff recently hauled 50 haul trucks loads of the yard waste material away from this area to make room for the fall leaf season. The yard waste goes to another location on the landfill grounds, placed into large windrows, where it is turned regularly to biodegrade, similar to composting. Oxygen, moisture, and temperature all play a role in the process of breaking down the organic material. The finished product is then used at the landfill to assist with maintaining washouts and covering clay areas to help in the growth of vegetation.
