[ARCHIVED] How to Handle Yard Waste This Fall

Leaves

24/7 Free Yard Waste Area

Newton residents may dispose of leaves, small twigs less than one-quarter inch in diameter, hedge trimmings, garden waste and weeds at the Newton Sanitary Landfill free of charge in the designated 24/7 Free Yard Waste Area. Residents will be asked to empty the container or bag they use to transport the yard waste at the landfill.

City of Newton Compostable Leaf Bags

City of Newton compostable leaf bags are collected during regular curbside pickup every week from March 25 through December 7 at no charge. Leaf bags may contain leaves, small twigs less than one-quarter inch in diameter, hedge trimmings, garden waste, and weeds. Leaf bags should not contain grass clippings. These bags can be purchased at Fareway, Farver True Value, Hy-Vee, Theisen's, Wal-mart, and the Newton Sanitary Landfill.

Composting

Composting can be used to provide soil and mulch for gardens and plants. A brochure explaining how to start a compost pile at your residence can be obtained at the Iowa State University Extension Jasper County Office at 550 North 2nd Ave West (DMACC Newton Campus).

Mulching

Mulching mowers cut grass and leaves into very small pieces that may be left on the lawn. Grass clippings and leaves can also be bagged and used as mulch in vegetable gardens, around flowers, trees, and shrubs.
