[ARCHIVED] Closure of City Buildings through April 30; Prohibits Use of Playground Equipment & Restrooms

Out of an abundance of caution amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Michael L. Hansen has updated his proclamation. The updated proclamation extends the closure of all City of Newton buildings from public access through April 30, 2020 and prohibits the use of playground equipment.

The proclamation now also prohibits the use of public restrooms and public playground equipment at the City of Newton Parks. All playground equipment and restrooms at City of Newton parks are closed effective immediately, until further notice. COVID-19 has been known to spread through hard surface contact. The City of Newton does not have an effective way to sanitize the playground equipment to keep everyone safe.
Residents are asked to do their part to keep family, friends, neighbors, and our community safe. Signs will be posted at each park regarding the closure. The City of Newton is keeping your well-being top of mind in everything we do.

“To prohibit the use of our City’s playgrounds was a difficult decision,” said Mayor Hansen. “We want our residents to get outside, get some fresh air, and exercise – as it is important for the well-being of our residents’ mental and physical health. But we became convinced taking action to close our playgrounds was necessary to protect Newton’s families and our youth from further spread of the coronavirus.”
