[ARCHIVED] City of Newton Mayoral Proclamation State of Emergency Declaration

WHEREAS, a worldwide pandemic has affected the citizens of Newton, Iowa and then, on August 10, 2020, a devastating storm affected the City of Newton, Iowa; and

WHEREAS, this storm caused extremely high winds, heavy rains, and thunderstorms; and

WHEREAS, damage to public and private property is widespread throughout the City of Newton, Iowa; and

WHEREAS, many citizens, businesses, and other entities are in need of assistance, including financial assistance, due to being displaced, left without power, or suffering major damage; and

WHEREAS, these conditions threaten the public peace and the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of Newton; and

WHEREAS, Section 372.14(2) of the Code of Iowa grants the Mayor powers to declare an emergency and govern through proclamation to protect the health and safety of the citizens of Newton.

NOW, THEREFORE, IN CONSIDERATION OF THE FOREGOING AND OTHER VALID EMERGENCY CONCERNS, I, MICHAEL L. HANSEN, MAYOR FOR THE CITY OF NEWTON, IOWA PROCLAIM THE FOLLOWING:

Section 1. I hereby declare that a state of emergency exists within the City of Newton, Iowa due to the severe storm occurring on August 10, 2020.

Section 2. Said state of emergency shall be effective from the date of this proclamation and shall continue for ninety (90) days or until otherwise rescinded, extended, or cancelled by subsequent Mayoral Proclamation.
