Posted on: September 22, 2020[ARCHIVED] Police Receive Reports About Rental Scams

The Newton Police Department has received reports of a rental housing scam. Scammers know that finding the right rental can be hard work, and a seemingly good deal is hard to pass up. The scammers are hijacking a real rental or real estate listing and are trying to rent property they do not own or have the right to rent. We want residents of our community to be smart and safe. If asked to pay a security deposit or first month’s rent before you’ve met the landlord, seen the rental, or signed a lease - it may be too good to be true and may be a scam. If you are contacted by these individuals, do not give them any money or information and contact your local law enforcement agency to report it.
