[ARCHIVED] Fire Department & Newton High School National Honor Society Students Work to Clear Fire Hydrants

Newton Fire Department Staff and Newton High School National Honor Society Students Work to Clear F

Newton High School National Honor Society students helped the Newton Fire Department clear hydrants in a residential neighborhood to the northeast of Newton High School. The NHS Advisor Tim Hemann contacted the Fire Department to complete a project that would assist the department in some way.

With recent storms, many hydrants in the community have been partially or completely covered by snow. Fire and EMS crews assisted the NHS students in clearing around approximately 40 fire hydrants on 2/1/2021.

The Newton Fire Department asks for assistance from residents to keep your fire hydrants clear.

“Time is of the essence when fire crews are responding to a fire.  The minutes, or even seconds, saved by having fire hydrants cleared for crews can make the difference between life or death” said Fire Chief Jarrod Wellik.

If you plan on clearing hydrants try to clear a path approximately three feet in diameter around the hydrant with an access path to the street.
