On October 26, 2021 information was obtained from an individual in Indiana by the Newton (Illinois) Police Department in of a school shooting that that is to occur on October 27, 2021 at "Jasper County High School". The threat was obtained through social media and the recipient of the Snapchat contacted the Newton (Illinois) Police Department which is in Jasper County, Illinois.
Based on the message obtained by law enforcement the location of the potential shooting is vague and the Newton (Illinois) Police Department shared the threat with all Jasper County/Newton law enforcement agencies in the United States out of an abundance of caution. This includes the Newton (Iowa) Police Department and the Jasper County (Iowa) Sheriff's Department.
At this time law enforcement has been unable to verify the validity of the threat or identify where the threat originated.
The Newton (Iowa) Police Department and the Newton (Iowa) Community School District are aware of the threat and are implementing additional security measures to ensure the safety of students, parents and staff.
