Congratulations to KeyLeigh Kauffman, age 3 1/2, who completed the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program this week! KeyLeigh said her favorite books are the Peppa Pig and Daniel Tiger books. KeyLeigh received a Dr. Suess bag full of items to help her get ready for kindergarten, and a book to keep. KeyLeigh will have a great jumpstart for school, because studies show that being read to every day at home is the single biggest predictor of later success in school. Reading together every day is also a wonderful way to bond with your child. Reading 1000 Books is not as hard as it might sound, if you read just one book per day to your child, it will take three years to hit the 1000 Books mark!
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is an ongoing program at the Newton Public Library, designed to encourage daily reading at home. Research demonstrates that young children who are read to on a regular basis have an advantage when learning to read for themselves. Reading together builds closeness and early literacy skills, which are the foundations for school success. Reading 1,000 books isn’t as hard as it might sound. If you read only one bedtime story every night for three years, you will have read 1,095 books to your child.
