The State of Iowa has mandated that Electrical Inspectors within political subdivisions shall be certified as Residential Electrical Inspectors and/or Commercial Electrical Inspectors effective January 1, 2015.
The City of Newton Building Official, Melvin Duncan, possesses both the Residential Electrical Inspector and Commercial Electrical Inspector certifications. Accordingly, the permitting and inspecting of electrical installations within the City of Newton remain the same and be handled at the local level.
Jurisdictions without certified inspectors as of January 1, 2015, would have to arrange for the State Inspectors to take over permitting and inspecting electrical installations. See Iowa Code 103.24 STATE INSPECTION – INAPPLICABILITY IN CERTAIN POLITICAL SUBDIVISIONS – ELECTRICAL INSPECTORS – CERTIFICATE OF QUALIFICATION, and Iowa Code 103.29 POLITICAL SUBDIVISIONS – INSPECTIONS – AUTHORITY OF POLITICAL SUBDIVISIONS.
