Newton, Iowa, are you ready? It’s time to prove that Newton, Iowa is the best Newton around.
Today marks the start of the Newton vs. Newton Challenge, a series of contests designed to foster community pride and have fun with a little friendly rivalry between Newton, Iowa and Newton, Kansas. The challenge will run from Monday, October 12 through Friday, October 23. The winner will be announced Monday, Oct. 26. It is a best-of-five competition, competing through the following challenges.
Fitness Challenge: In this competition, both communities will flex their muscles to prove who has the fittest residents. This challenge will be measured by which community can get the most people to participate in a two mile community bike ride. In Newton, Iowa the bike ride will take place on Thursday, October 22 at 5:30 p.m., with the starting point at Maytag Park.
Pride Challenge: This competition will measure which Newton is proudest of their schools. This challenge will be measured by which community can get the most people to appear in photos wearing school colors in support of their high school or college. People can submit their photos via email to info@gettoknownewton.com, via hashtag on Twitter or Instagram by using the hashtag #NewtonIowaRocks, or via Facebook by posting the photos to the Get to Know Newton page. Group photos are encouraged!
Giving Challenge: This challenge will be which community can get the most items donated to the local animal rescue league throughout the course of the challenge. Newton, Iowa will be measuring donations to the Jasper County Animal Rescue League. Donations can be dropped off at Newton City Hall, Newton Public Library, or directly to the Jasper County Animal Rescue League.
Foodie Challenge: This challenge will answer the question—which Newton has the best food? People are encouraged to show off their local cuisine by sending in photos of their favorite homemade recipes or favorite menu items from local restaurants. People can submit their photos via email to info@gettoknownewton.com, via hashtag on Twitter or Instagram by using the hashtag #NewtonIowaRocks, or via Facebook by posting the photos to the Get to Know Newton page. Photos of Maytag Blue Cheese recipes are encouraged!
Reading Challenge: This challenge is a measure of which community can get the most community members to attend a reading event. Newton, Iowa’s event will be at the Newton Public Library on Wednesday, October 21 at 3:45 p.m. A police officer, a fire fighter, and a librarian will share a story with children and kids will have a change to get an up-close look at a firetruck and a police car.
The cities are competing for bragging rights; may the best Newton win!
