The Newton Fire Department (NFD) Citizen Fire Academy will take place in the Spring of 2017. The goal of this program is to enhance relationships between Newton residents and the Newton Fire Department. This program, although not new to Fire & EMS agencies is designed to give a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the fire department in the community. Participants of the program will have the unique opportunity to learn how the Newton Fire Department provides quality services to its customers. The Citizen Fire Academy will meet once a week for six (6) weeks. The program will be on Tuesday nights from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. It will consist of a combination of classroom instruction and practical exercises at the Newton Fire Station located at 410 S 2nd Ave W. This program will be physically demanding on most skills nights and a majority of the Academy nights will last the full four hours.

The following is the course outline (subject to change):
Week 1(4/18/2017) Welcome to NFD, FD Operations, and Orientation
Week 2(4/25/2017) Introduction to Emergency Medical Services
Week 3(5/2/2017) Introduction to Hazardous Materials Response
Week 4(5/9/2017) Introduction to Technical Rescue
Week 5(5/16/2017) Introduction to Firefighting
Week 6(5/23/2017) Citizen Academy Graduation and Family Picnic
