[ARCHIVED] City of Newton Announces the Appointment of Matthew Muckler as the new City Administrator

The Mayor and City Council of Newton, Iowa, are pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Muckler as the new City Administrator for the City of Newton.  Muckler will begin his service with the City of Newton no later than April 15th.

The City had an excellent pool of candidates to choose from, and we are grateful and appreciative to all of the candidates who applied for this position.  The City originally received 37 resumes from 16 states.  Council met in closed session on January 9th to analyze 15 of the applicants and reduce the field to four individuals.  An extensive interview process was held with the four finalists on January 20th, 2017.  Interview panels included the Mayor and City Council, city stakeholders, city board and commission chairs, department directors, and a panel of employees from each city department.  Following the panel interviews, council met in closed session to deliberate and select the next city administrator.

Matt is a passionate public servant with twelve years’ public sector experience.  He currently serves as the city administrator for the City of West Branch.  He was previously the assistant to the town manager for Buckeye, AZ and the council administrator for Vigo County, IN.  Matt previously served as a state representative in the Missouri Legislature and as a Russian linguist in the U.S. Army. Matt received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Saint Louis University and his master’s degree in public administration from Indiana State University.

Matt is an International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Credentialed Manager Candidate and a member of the Iowa City/County Management Association. He is certified as a Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) through the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC) and holds certifications as an Iowa Certified Municipal Clerk and as an Iowa Certified Municipal Finance Officer through the Iowa Municipal Finance Officers Association (IMFOA). Matt is also a member of the East Central Intergovernmental Association Council.
