The Newton Main Street program is taking a project of restoring four major murals in the downtown area. This projects consists of cleaning and repainting the American Flag mural on the side of the VFW 1655 post building, the Welcome To Newton mural on the side of the E-Clips building, the Historic Building mural on the side of the Farmer’s Wife building, and the Countryside mural in Sersland Park.
The reason this is being done is because all of the murals in the downtown area are over ten years old. This project will span from June 1st and into July. The people undertaking this project are three University of Iowa Graduate Students.
The total cost to complete the work, including cleaning, touch ups and repairs in approximately $14,000. The University of Iowa has also donated $7,000 to help go towards this project, however another $7,000 however still needs to be accounted for by potential grants and community contributions.
