In 2015, the City of Newton utilized 13 outdoor warning sirens located through city limits. As part of the Safe Community Initiative within the City’s Comprehensive Plan, staff began planning a replacement schedule of old outdoor warning sirens that did not have battery backup, as well as to improve the coverage throughout the city. Since the schedule was created, seven outdoor warning sirens have been replaced, thee sirens were eliminated and a couple of sirens were moved to new locations to provide better overlap coverage. The most recent included two sirens located adjacent to Maytag Park and HA Lynn Stadium and on S 8th Ave E just west of the YMCA.
