[ARCHIVED] Newton Police Department Involved in Standoff; Takes Subject Into Custody

Newton Police Department

On January 24th, 2018, shortly after 12 a.m., officers from the Newton Police Department went to 1330 East 12th Street North in an attempt to locate Brandon Lee James on multiple outstanding arrest warrants for Burglary 1st degree (Class B Felony) and Probation Violation for eluding.

At the residence, officers confirmed with other occupants that James was present in the house. James became aware the officers were at the residence looking for him and subsequently barricaded himself in a bedroom threatening the use of a weapon as well as self-harm.  Negotiations between the Newton Police Department and James were ongoing for several hours. James voluntarily surrendered shortly after 7:30 a.m. and was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for mental health evaluation.

Further charges are pending resulting from the standoff incident.

The Newton Police Department appreciates the cooperation from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and Newton Fire Department in resolving the incident.
