The street lights around the downtown square will be back on this evening. The outage occurred after a junction box filled with water due to ice and snow melt. The water led to a short in the electrical system.
The City of Newton Public Works department received a call this week reporting the street lights were out on the north side of the square. Public Works, Alliant Energy and Van Maanen Electric worked together to diagnose the problem and repair the junction box. The street lights were tested this afternoon and should function as normal this evening.
Community members are able to submit a street light repair request form to Alliant Energy by visiting the City of Newton website and choosing “Report a Street Light Outage” under the “I Want To…” menu.
