Parks staff has been busy doing tree work between a month filled with snow removal and cemetery burials. Westwood Golf Course has been the site of most of the tree removal. With the damage to trees from the Emerald Ash Borer starting to show, removing the trees is becoming a priority, before it becomes public safety issue. With over 30 Ash trees still left at Westwood Golf Course, efforts are underway to have them removed in the next couple of years.
Parks Operations staff continue to pursue grants for trees to help implement a tree replacement program. In conjunction with Red Pride Day, in 2017, the Parks Operations, along with other Public Works Operations, utilized high school students to plant over 50 trees in parks and city right of ways. This helped educate the students, as well as the public, in tree diversity and will help reduce the impact of loss of certain species of trees in the future.
