Community Services and Public Works staff continue on completing facility and operational improvements ahead of Maytag Pool’s May 31st opening. In addition to the normal cleaning and painting in the pool itself, numerous repairs and upgrades have been made to the pool and buildings. These include a new set of concrete steps near the ticket window, refinishing the wood seating areas near the concession stand, removal of a fence to open up a sun-bathing area in the lawn west of the pool, and repairs to the perimeter fence and retaining walls. Staff is also exploring options on upgrading the existing safety padding under and around the 3-meter diving board. Other planned improvements at the pool include seeking bids soon for the rehabilitation of the waterslides after the 2018 pool season ends.
On the operational side, changes and training opportunities are being implemented to increase the knowledge and professionalism of the lifeguards and their supervisors. The City will be using a $1,000 safety grant from ICAP to participate in the American Red Cross’s Aquatic Examiner Service, which is an unannounced inspection and all-encompassing review of the lifeguard program and pool operations during normal business hours. Lifeguard supervisors will also be taking additional training through the Red Cross in lifeguard management. Refresher training in first-aid, CPR, and AED is being scheduled for all lifeguard staff through the Newton Fire Department. In-service training is also planned to include a real-time emergency drill that includes lifeguards completing a water rescue, calling 911, and having the paramedic’s respond to the pool. Also, all lifeguard safety equipment and apparel is being upgraded to current standards.
Concession stand upgrades include revising the concession options available to increase overall efficiency with less staff. Changes in product offerings should allow for quicker delivery, less waste, and reduced cleaning needs of equipment. Purchasing of concession products for the pool has been merged with the Westwood Clubhouse concessions operations, which should help increase the efficiency at both locations.
