Members of the Newton Fire Department conducted ice rescue training last week at the Izaak Walton League north of Newton. “With all the ponds in the area this type of training is very important” says Fire Marshal Mike Knoll. Knoll is certified by Dive Rescue, Inc. a Colorado based Ice, Swift Water and Dive rescue training company. The Newton Fire Department has had to use its’ ice rescue skills 5 times in the past. This is a high risk operation with low occurrence which means the risk for personal safety is great and the number of actual calls is low. “Training is very important to keep our people safe” said Knoll.
