Community Services staff continue work on construction plans for the upcoming 1st Ave E HMA Resurfacing Project. This project includes milling and asphalt resurfacing of the entire width of 1st Ave E from E 14th St to E 28th St. Also to be included in the project is sidewalk and trail construction between E 14th St and Iowa Speedway Drive. Pending City Council approval, the project is scheduled to be included in the Iowa DOT’s June 18, 2019 bid letting with construction anticipated for late-summer of 2019. $600,000 of project costs are being paid by the Iowa DOT. The remaining $453,000 in project costs are to be paid using City of Newton’s SWAP funds, which require no local matching funds from the City.
