The Newton Police Department’s calls for service reported incidents and the overall crime rate for 2018 was relatively unchanged from 2017. Calls for service increased by only 2% and total incidents reported increased by only 1.5%.
Crime reports in Newton increased 3% in 2018 but overall are down in relation to the 20-year average. Part I crimes (aggravated assault, forcible rape, murder, and robbery, arson, burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) were down 15% with 481 reports while Part II (simple assault, curfew offenses and loitering, embezzlement, forgery and counterfeiting, disorderly conduct, driving under the influence, drug offenses, fraud, gambling, liquor offenses, offenses against the family, prostitution, public drunkenness, runaways, sex offenses, vandalism, vagrancy, and weapons offenses) crimes were up 19% with 859 reports.
Newton’s calls for service and crime rate remains consistent with other Iowa communities of the same or similar population and Newton continues to be a very safe community.
