The 2019 summer reading program theme is "A Universe of Stories" with the goal for readers to dream big, believe in themselves, and create their own story. The Newton Public Library will have programs related to space exploration, as well as a display from NASA. To kick off the summer reading program, and register for the special events, join the Newton Public Library for the Summer Reading Kick-Off Picnic from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4. Hot dogs provided by Hy-Vee of Newton will be served on the library's lawn.
How the reading program works:
Swing by the library to register for the Summer Reading Program Events for kids, teens, and adults; as well as pick up reading logs for the summer reading program. All youth registrants will receive a reading log, plastic book bag, and a free youth admission ticket to Blank Park Zoo. When you reach your reading goal, bring the book log to the library!
Children will receive a ticket to the Summer Reading Program Pool Party at Maytag Pool on August 2 at 7 p.m. Additionally, all youth readers who turn in their book log will also receive two tickets (one for an adult, one for a child) to attend the Iowa Cubs Homerun Reader Game on Sunday, July 28 at 1:08 p.m. and a free kid's meal at any Chipotle restaurant. Children who read a minimum of 10 books will receive a Culver's kid's meal and a free scoop of frozen custard at the Culver's in Newton.
Teens who register for the Summer Reading Program will be eligible to win a Kindle in a special drawing. The first 75 teens to register will receive a buy-one-get-one-free coupon to any Chipotle restaurant. Teens who finish the reading program will be entered into a drawing for a free 30-minute flight over Newton provided by Johnson Aviation.
